What is gum countouring?

This diagnosis is made when more gums appear when smiling than there should be, and this condition is also called Gummy Smile. Gummy Smile is more common in women and is a major aesthetic problem.

The various procedures applied to patients with gummy smile restore the aesthetic appearance, contribute significantly to the patient’s self-confidence and smile, and give harmony and balance to the smile.

How is gum countouring performed?

The treatment of gum contouring consists of a series of surgical procedures and drug treatments. The procedures to be performed are determined by the dentist.

Surgery to reshape the gums (gingivectomy – gum aesthetics).

It is the most commonly used technique to correct the gum smile. First, the teeth and gums are treated, cleaned and prepared for the procedure.

After local anaesthesia, the excess gums are cut with a scalpel or laser. When the patient smiles, the entire gum should be evenly visible and aligned. The procedure is not painful and the healing process after the procedure is very quick. It is ideal for balanced aesthetics of the smile.

Botulinum toxin (Botox application)

It is popularly known as Botox. Botulinum toxin can be used in cases where the cause of the gum problem when smiling is muscle hyperactivity of the lips. Its purpose is to prevent the upper lip from moving up too much when smiling by preventing the muscle from contracting.

What should be done after the gum treatment?

  • Since hot and cold sensitivity may occur, desensitising toothpastes should be used.

  • Teeth should be brushed regularly every day.

  • It may take 2-3 weeks to heal completely.
