Two-Stage Dental Implants in Turkey: Your Follow-Up in Brussels Between Trips
Medically reviewed by Dr. Öznur Yedek, MSc — D-Care Turkey, Side / Antalya. Last updated: October 2026.
Many implant treatments in Turkey are planned in two trips: the implants are placed during the first stay, and the final crowns or bridge are fitted during a second stay a few months later. The months in between are when the implants fuse with the bone — and also when many patients worry about being on their own once they are back home in Belgium or France. At D-Care, that period is not a gap. Our clinic D-Care Belgium in Ixelles (Brussels) can see you for check-ups, while the D-Care Turkey team in Side keeps responsibility for your treatment plan.
Why dental implants are often done in two stages
An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone. Before it can carry a permanent tooth, the bone needs time to grow tightly around it — a process called osseointegration. The time needed differs from one person to another. It depends on bone quality and volume, the position in the mouth (upper or lower jaw), whether a bone graft or sinus lift was carried out, your general health, and habits such as smoking. Your surgeon decides the interval after examining you and reviewing your X-rays or 3D scan.
A two-stage approach is commonly chosen when:
the bone needs time to stabilise around the implants before they are loaded with final teeth;
a bone graft or sinus lift was done at the same time as the implants;
several implants are placed and the final bridge needs a precise, fully healed base;
the surgeon judges that immediate loading is not appropriate in your situation.
Some patients are suitable for faster protocols, for example a fixed temporary bridge on All-on-4 or All-on-6 implants. Whether this is possible is a clinical decision made after examination and imaging — it cannot be promised before the team has seen your case.
Your first trip to Side: placing the implants
During the first stay at D-Care Turkey, the typical steps are:
examination, panoramic X-ray or 3D imaging, and a final discussion of the plan with the surgeon;
implant placement under local anaesthesia — for All-on-4/6 and multiple implants, conscious sedation can be given by an anaesthesiologist;
healing caps or a temporary solution, depending on your case;
written aftercare instructions and a check before you fly home.
Our surgeons Dr. Öznur Yedek and Dr. Emin work with Dr. Bilal (dentist) and Dr. Çisel (prosthodontist), so surgery and the future prosthesis are planned together. Transfers to our partner hotels (Side Moon Palace, Side Amour Hotel) are organised with a TÜRSAB-registered agency.
The months in between: what to watch at home
Usually normal in the first days:
mild swelling and tenderness, often peaking around day two or three;
slight bleeding on the first day;
some difficulty chewing on the treated side.
Contact us if you notice:
pain or swelling that increases after the first days instead of slowly settling;
a bad taste, pus or fever;
a healing cap that feels loose, or metal becoming visible through the gum;
a temporary prosthesis that rubs, cracks or moves;
numbness of the lip or chin that does not fade.
In any of these situations, send us a message on WhatsApp with clear photos. We will tell you whether a visit in Brussels is advisable before your next trip. Please do not simply wait for the second stay if something feels wrong.
Your check-up in Ixelles between the two stays
D-Care Belgium — Avenue Auguste Rodin 12, 1050 Ixelles (Bruxelles) — is an INAMI-contracted (conventionné) dental practice. During the healing phase, a visit there can include:
a clinical check of the gums and healing around each implant;
a check, and where possible a small adjustment, of your temporary prosthesis;
an X-ray if the dentist considers it useful;
hygiene advice and professional cleaning of your natural teeth;
intraoral photos and images that, with your consent, are shared with D-Care Turkey.
The dentist in Ixelles examines you and gives an opinion. The treatment plan, the timing of the second stage and any change to the plan remain the responsibility of the D-Care Turkey team who placed your implants. The consultation in Ixelles is billed and reimbursed like a visit to any conventionné dentist in Belgium. Care at the practice is provided in French and English.
The second trip: from healed implants to final teeth
Once the surgeon confirms that the implants have healed well, the second stay usually includes:
a check of implant stability and a control X-ray;
digital impressions with an intraoral scanner;
try-in and fitting of the final crowns or bridge — zirconia crowns for single implants, and for All-on-4/6 a Toronto-type bridge with a titanium bar and zirconia crowns;
bite adjustment and instructions for long-term maintenance.
The length of the second stay depends on the number of teeth and the laboratory work involved. It is confirmed in your written treatment plan once the team has examined you.
After the final teeth: long-term follow-up in Brussels
Implants do not decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed if plaque builds up (peri-implant disease). Regular check-ups and professional cleaning help to detect problems early. Many of our patients choose to have these routine visits in Ixelles, close to home, while D-Care Turkey remains available for any question about the work carried out in Side.
FAQ
How long is the gap between the two trips?
Often a few months, but it varies with bone quality, the position of the implants and whether grafting was needed. The surgeon confirms the timing after examination and imaging.
Can I do the healing check in Brussels instead of flying back?
Yes, a check-up during healing can take place in Ixelles. The second stage — the final crowns or bridge — is carried out in Side by the team that planned your treatment.
Is the consultation in Ixelles reimbursed?
It is billed and reimbursed like a consultation with any conventionné dentist in Belgium.
What should I send before my first trip?
A recent panoramic X-ray if you have one, photos of your teeth and your medical history. If you prefer, you can first have a consultation in Ixelles; with your consent, the images are sent to D-Care Turkey for treatment planning. The final treatment decision is made after examination and imaging.
