Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic dental treatments. Before you start, it helps to know what whitening can realistically change, what it cannot, which side effects are possible and why a dental examination should come first. Whether you are considering it in Belgium or as part of a treatment plan in Turkey, here are the essentials.

What is professional teeth whitening?

Whitening lightens the natural shade of enamel and dentine with a peroxide-based gel (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). The gel releases oxygen that breaks down the pigments responsible for staining. At the dentist there are usually two approaches, sometimes combined:

  • In-chair whitening: the gel is applied in the clinic, with the gums protected, in one or more sessions.

  • At-home whitening: custom trays, made from an impression or a scan, are worn at home with a lower-concentration gel, following the protocol set by your dentist.

In the European Union, stronger whitening products are restricted to the dental setting: the first application is done by a dentist or under their supervision, and they are not intended for under-18s. That is a good reason to be cautious about kits sold without a prior examination.

Teeth whitening before and after: what to expect

Before-and-after photos are everywhere, but results vary from person to person. They depend on:

  • your starting shade and the type of staining (coffee, tea, tobacco, ageing);

  • deep discolouration, for example from certain medicines or excess fluoride, which responds less well;

  • the thickness and condition of your enamel;

  • your habits after treatment.

Whitening is not permanent: over time, food and drink can bring back some of the colour. Occasional touch-ups agreed with your dentist help maintain it. Be wary of promises of a "perfect white" — the aim is a natural shade that suits your face.

Is teeth whitening safe? Risks and side effects

Done after an examination and with a suitable protocol, whitening is a routine treatment. There are still side effects worth knowing about:

  • Tooth sensitivity: common during treatment and for a few days after; it is usually temporary. Your dentist can shorten application times or suggest a desensitising product.

  • Gum irritation: when gel touches the gums, which is why well-fitting trays and protection in the chair matter.

  • Uneven results: on teeth with decay, cracks or old fillings.

  • Overuse: stacking kits or exceeding recommended times does not make teeth whiter, it only increases discomfort.

Whitening is not for everyone. Untreated decay, inflamed gums, strong sensitivity, pregnancy or breastfeeding call for advice first, and your dentist may recommend postponing or avoiding treatment.

Crowns, veneers and fillings: what whitening does not change

A key point that is often missed: the gel only lightens natural teeth. Crowns, veneers (ceramic or zirconia) and composite fillings keep their original shade. In practice:

  • if you already have crowns or veneers on visible teeth, whitening the neighbouring teeth can create a colour mismatch;

  • if you are planning veneers or crowns, whitening usually comes first, so the shade of the restorations can be matched to your lightened teeth;

  • after whitening, it is usual to wait a few weeks for the shade to settle before making new cosmetic restorations.

Teeth whitening in Turkey: how it fits a treatment plan

At D-Care Turkey in Side (Antalya), whitening is offered as a cosmetic treatment, on its own or as part of a wider plan (veneers, zirconia crowns, smile design). The plan is drawn up after a clinical examination and, where needed, X-rays; the clinic uses an intraoral scanner for digital impressions. The final treatment decision is only made after that examination and imaging.

What makes the price of whitening vary is more than the technique: the number of sessions, whether custom trays are needed, any treatment required beforehand (scaling, fillings) and whether it is part of a cosmetic project. A personalised quote only makes sense once your teeth, photos and X-rays have been seen.

Before and after whitening: follow-up in Brussels

Living in Brussels or Wallonia? You are not on your own, before or after your trip. Our clinic D-Care Belgium — Avenue Auguste Rodin 12, 1050 Ixelles (Brussels) — can see you for:

  • an examination before you travel: a check of decay, gums and existing restorations, with X-rays if needed, shared with D-Care Turkey with your consent to prepare the plan;

  • a check-up after treatment if sensitivity persists or you have questions about aftercare;

  • regular follow-up of your teeth, veneers or crowns, including professional scaling, which also helps keep your smile bright.

The Ixelles dentist is INAMI-contracted (conventionné), so the consultation is reimbursed as with any contracted dentist. The dentist examines you and gives an opinion; the treatment plan, the quote and the final decision remain with D-Care Turkey. The clinic answers the phone Monday to Friday, 10:00–17:00, in French and English.

Tips to keep your teeth whiter for longer

  • Cut down on coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, especially in the first days after treatment.

  • Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes.

  • Have regular scaling and check-ups.

  • Don't combine several over-the-counter kits without advice.

  • Tell your dentist about any sensitivity that lasts.

Teeth whitening FAQ

How long does teeth whitening take?

An in-chair session usually takes one to two hours; an at-home protocol runs over one to several weeks. Results last from several months to a few years, depending on your habits.

Does whitening damage enamel?

With suitable products and a protocol supervised by a dentist, whitening is not meant to wear enamel. Overuse and unregulated products, however, increase the risk of sensitivity and irritation.

Can veneers or crowns be whitened?

No. Only natural teeth lighten. If a restoration no longer matches the shade you want, replacing it can be considered after an examination.

Can I be examined in Brussels and treated in Turkey?

Yes. You can be examined in Ixelles; with your consent, your X-rays and photos are shared with D-Care Turkey, which prepares the plan and the quote.
