Gum Recession Around Crowns or Veneers After Turkey: Check-Ups in Brussels

You came home from Turkey with new crowns or veneers, and for months everything looked right. Then one day, in the bathroom mirror, you notice that the gum seems to have moved: a thin darker line at the edge of a crown, a tooth that looks slightly longer, or a spot that has become sensitive to cold. Gum recession around crowns and veneers is a common reason for questions after treatment abroad. It is not automatically a sign that something went wrong — but it is a sign that the area deserves a proper look.

This guide explains what gum recession around crowns can mean, which signs should prompt a check-up, and how you can be examined close to home in Brussels, at our clinic in Ixelles, while staying connected to the team that treated you in Side.

What gum recession around a crown or veneer looks like

Gum recession means the gum line moves away from the crown edge and exposes a little more of the tooth or root underneath. Patients usually describe it in one of these ways:

  • a visible line or "step" where the crown meets the tooth;

  • a crown or veneer that looks longer than its neighbours;

  • a slightly different colour at the gum edge, because the natural tooth or root shows;

  • new sensitivity to cold, sweet food or brushing at the gum line;

  • food catching more easily at the edge of the restoration.

Sometimes only one tooth is affected, sometimes several. The appearance alone does not tell you the cause — that is why an examination matters.

Possible causes

Gum tissue changes over time, with or without crowns. The most frequent factors dentists look at are:

  • Brushing technique: a hard brush or strong horizontal scrubbing can wear the gum away, especially on canines and premolars.

  • Gum inflammation (gingivitis or periodontitis): plaque at the crown edge can inflame the gum and, over time, lead to loss of supporting tissue.

  • Teeth grinding or clenching: heavy forces on the teeth can play a role, especially when combined with other factors.

  • Thin gum tissue: some people naturally have a thin, delicate gum line that recedes more easily.

  • Healing and remodelling: after preparation and cementation, the gum around a new restoration can settle slightly in the first months.

  • Fit and contour of the restoration: in some cases, the shape or edge of a crown can make cleaning harder; only an examination with X-rays can assess this.

Most of the time it is a combination. The goal of a check-up is to find out which factors apply to you, rather than guessing.

When to book a check-up

You do not need to wait for pain. Book an appointment if you notice:

  • recession that seems to progress over weeks or months;

  • bleeding, swelling or a bad taste around a crown;

  • sensitivity that does not settle;

  • a crown that feels loose or a dark area at the edge that is getting bigger;

  • recession around several teeth at once.

If you have severe pain, swelling of the face or fever, see a doctor or dentist without delay.

Your check-up in Brussels, at D-Care Belgium in Ixelles

Being treated in Turkey does not mean you are alone once you are back home. At D-Care Belgium — Avenue Auguste Rodin 12, 1050 Ixelles (Bruxelles) — the dentist can examine your crowns or veneers and the surrounding gum. A visit typically includes:

  • a clinical examination of the gum line, the crown edges and your bite;

  • measuring the gum pockets to check for inflammation;

  • X-rays where needed, to look at the bone level and the fit of the restorations;

  • photos that can be shared with D-Care Turkey, with your consent;

  • practical advice on brushing, interdental cleaning and, if relevant, a night guard.

The Ixelles clinic is run by INAMI-contracted (conventionné) dentists, so the consultation is billed and reimbursed like at any contracted dentist in Belgium. The clinic speaks French and English, and the phone line is open Monday to Friday, 10:00–17:00.

How Brussels and Side work together

The dentist in Ixelles examines you and gives an opinion. With your agreement, the findings, X-rays and photos are shared with the D-Care Turkey team in Side, who know your original treatment. The treatment plan, any quote and the final decision remain with D-Care Turkey, and the final treatment decision is only made after examination and imaging.

Depending on the cause, options can range from simple steps — better cleaning technique, treating gum inflammation, a night guard, regular monitoring — to more involved solutions such as replacing a restoration or gum treatment. Which one fits your situation can only be decided after the examination.

How to protect your gums around crowns and veneers

  • Use a soft toothbrush and gentle, small movements at the gum line.

  • Clean between your teeth every day with interdental brushes or floss, as shown by your dentist.

  • Do not skip professional cleanings; plaque at the crown edge is the main enemy of healthy gums.

  • If you grind your teeth, ask whether a night guard is suitable for you.

  • Do not smoke, or try to reduce — smoking is closely linked to gum problems.

  • Keep your treatment documents and X-rays from Turkey; they help any dentist compare.

FAQ

Does gum recession mean my crown was badly made?

Not necessarily. Recession has many possible causes, including brushing habits, gum disease and grinding. Only an examination, ideally with X-rays, can tell what is happening in your case.

Will the gum grow back on its own?

Gum tissue that has receded does not usually grow back by itself. The aim is first to stop it from progressing; in some cases further treatment can be discussed after the examination.

Is the check-up in Ixelles reimbursed?

The consultation at the Ixelles clinic is reimbursed like at any INAMI-contracted dentist. Treatment carried out in Turkey is a separate matter and is not covered by the Belgian health insurance.

Can I come to Ixelles if I was not treated by D-Care Turkey?

Yes, the Ixelles clinic is a regular dental practice and welcomes patients for check-ups and everyday dental care.
