Dental crowns are one of the most common reasons patients from Belgium and France look into treatment in Turkey. A crown is a routine procedure, but it still needs the right diagnosis, the right material and proper follow-up once you are home. Here is how we approach crowns at D-Care Turkey in Side, and how our Brussels practice supports you before and after.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is a custom-made cap that fully covers a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. It can sit on a prepared natural tooth or on a dental implant (an implant crown). Unlike a veneer, which covers only the front surface, a crown wraps around the whole tooth.

When do you need a crown?

Whether a filling, an onlay, a veneer or a crown is the right choice is always decided after a clinical exam and X-rays. A crown is often considered when:

  • a tooth is heavily damaged by decay or a large old filling;

  • a tooth is cracked or fractured and needs protection;

  • a tooth has had root canal treatment and has become more fragile;

  • a missing tooth is replaced with an implant;

  • shape or colour needs correcting and a veneer is not enough.

A healthy tooth should not be reduced without a reason. If a more conservative option works, that is what should be offered.

Zirconia or E.max crowns: what's the difference?

The two most widely used materials today are metal-free:

  • Zirconia: very strong, well suited to back teeth and to people who clench or grind. It is also used for the crowns on full-arch implant bridges (Toronto-type prostheses).

  • Lithium disilicate (E.max): a highly translucent ceramic, often chosen for front teeth where aesthetics come first.

  • Porcelain fused to metal: a more traditional option, still indicated in some cases, but less natural-looking in daylight.

The right material depends on the tooth's position, your bite, the shade of the neighbouring teeth and habits such as grinding. It is chosen together with your dentist, not from a catalogue.

Dental crown treatment steps in Turkey

At D-Care Turkey in Side (Manavgat), a crown is completed over several appointments during your stay:

  • Exam and X-rays: we check the root, gums and bone; sometimes a root canal treatment is needed first.

  • Tooth preparation: the tooth is carefully shaped under local anaesthesia.

  • Digital impression: our clinic uses an intraoral scanner instead of traditional impression paste.

  • Temporary crown: it protects the tooth while the laboratory makes the final crown.

  • Try-in and fitting: shade, fit and bite are checked before the crown is permanently cemented.

How long you need to stay depends on the number of teeth and any preliminary treatment. It is set out in your treatment plan after the exam.

Dental crown cost: what makes the price vary

Many patients start by searching for the price. We prefer to explain what drives it, because a figure without an exam means very little:

  • the material (zirconia, E.max, porcelain fused to metal);

  • the number of teeth and where they are;

  • any treatment needed first (root canal, core build-up, gum treatment);

  • whether the crown goes on a natural tooth or an implant;

  • laboratory work and the level of aesthetic customisation.

Your quote is prepared by D-Care Turkey from your X-rays and photos. The final treatment plan is only confirmed after a clinical exam and imaging.

Before you travel: an exam in Brussels

If you live in Belgium, you can start with an appointment at D-Care Belgium, our INAMI-contracted dental practice in Ixelles. The dentist examines you, takes or reviews your X-rays and gives an opinion. With your consent, the images and photos are shared with the D-Care Turkey team, who prepare your plan and quote. The final treatment decision rests with D-Care Turkey.

After your crowns: you are not on your own back home

A well-made crown lasts a long time when it is cared for and checked regularly. Back in Belgium, our Ixelles practice can help with:

  • checking the gums around your crowns and professional cleaning;

  • checking your bite if chewing feels uncomfortable;

  • a follow-up X-ray when needed;

  • coordinating with D-Care Turkey if an adjustment is required.

Book a check-up promptly if you notice sensitivity that does not settle, bleeding or receding gums, a crown that feels loose, or a chip. The consultation in Ixelles is reimbursed like at any INAMI-contracted dentist.

FAQ

How long does a dental crown last?

It depends on oral hygiene, regular check-ups, your bite and grinding habits. No lifespan can be promised; regular follow-up is the best protection.

Does the tooth need a root canal before a crown?

Not always. A living tooth can receive a crown; root canal treatment is only done when X-rays or symptoms call for it.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Preparation is done under local anaesthesia. Mild sensitivity in the following days is possible; let us know if it persists.

Will my Belgian health insurance cover a crown made in Turkey?

The consultation at our Ixelles practice is reimbursed like at any INAMI-contracted dentist. For treatment carried out in Turkey, please check directly with your mutuelle.
